Who Is Behind the 2019 Just Sentencing Bill HB2270?
The American Friends Service Committee-AZ is a prisoner advocacy group spearheading Prison Reform and ReFraming Justice policy initiatives in Arizona. The HB2270 Just Sentencing Bill, is spearheaded by the AFSC-AZ, in coalition with the conservative advocacy group Americans for Prosperity and the ACLU.
The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) is a Quaker non-profit organization that has worked on peace and justice issues since 1917. AFSC is devoted to service, development, and peace programs throughout the world. Our work is based on the belief in the worth of every person, and faith in the power of love to overcome violence and injustice.
The AFSC office of Arizona opened in 1981 in Tucson.
Through research, documentation, media work, and policy advocacy, American Friends Service Committee – Arizona (AFSC-AZ) challenges criminalization, opposes prison expansion, and advocates for policy change to reduce the size and scope of the criminal punishment system, which encompasses not just physical places of incarceration, but also the proliferation of systems of control, surveillance, and supervision.
AFSC-AZ confronts mass incarceration and the criminal punishment system through sentencing reform, halting prison expansion and privatization, exposing the Treatment Industrial Complex, and acts as the premier platform for directly impacted people and communities to influence change through Reframing Justice.
Established in 1981 as one of Arizona’s only prisoner advocacy organizations, AFSC-AZ works to change public opinion from punitive and retributive approaches to a discussion of root causes, best practices, and inclusive and healing justice. Those directly impacted by the current criminal punishment system are central to this discussion,
and must be leaders in the movement to end mass incarceration.
AFSC-AZ combines advocacy for incarcerated people and their families with statewide policy change to document and improve prison conditions while working to reduce the number of people incarcerated in Arizona.
We serve as a resource for prisoners, ex-prisoners, and their family members, providing information and resources to address questions, and a place to get involved in bringing their voice to the seats of power in Arizona.
