Arizona HB2270 Restores Hope, Healing, and Fairness Back Into Arizona’s Sentencing Laws.

Arizona HB2270 Restores Hope, Healing, and Fairness Back Into Arizona’s Sentencing Laws.

We all want a justice system that is fair and proportionate, as well as effective at reducing recidivism. But the outdated practice of requiring all people to serve 85% of their sentence—regardless of the nature of the offense or their efforts to rehabilitate themselves—is ineffective, costly, and counterproductive.

Arizona is one of only two remaining states that still have this extreme sentencing law. And, it’s one of the main reasons Arizona has the 4th highest incarceration rate in the country and a staggering corrections budget over $1 billion.

We must restore proportionality and common sense to our sentencing laws, like other states have already done. People should have the opportunity to earn their release at a rate that is in line with the seriousness of the offense for which they were incarcerated. We should pass Arizona HB2270, the #JustSentencingAZ bill.
