Hope, Not Fear, Is the Way Forward

Hope, Not Fear, Is the Way Forward

Travis Hiland |

Hope is the catalyst for lasting change in people. Hope fosters personal responsibility and leadership. Hope builds bridges and cultivates reconciliation. Hope heals individuals, families, and communities. Hope envisions the future, renews the path forward from pain and grief.

Fear and retribution, returning pain for pain and sorrow for sorrow, whether in our sentencing practices or our personal lives, anchors us all in the past –tethers us to our fears.

THE WAY FORWARD:
The way forward is to nourish the better angels of our nature. Temper justice with mercy.

Restore hope with #HB2270. Allow our brothers and sisters in prison the opportunity to earn their way back to their families with good behavior and positive programming. Bring back common sense fairness and proportionality to our sentencing practices.

Reach out to Speaker of the House, Rusty Bowers, urge him to have HB2270 and other criminal justice reform bills heard in committee. Hearing these bills in committee simply allows the conversation to begin! We must not be afraid of having an honest conversation about restoring common sense to our sentencing policies and focusing on people, not prisons.

THE TRUTH IS:
The truth is, the vast majority of people we throw away in prisons are NOT serious violent offenders. And many of them have been falsely accused and pushed through a system too powerful to defend against.

We must not impose heavy-handed retributive justice as a one-size-fits-all reaction. It negatively harms us all, saints and sinners alike. Create a path forward with HB2270.
