What is the 2019 Arizona Just Sentencing Bill (HB2270)?
HB2270 is a bill introduced by Rep. Walt Blackman, R-Snowflake. It has bipartisan support and is endorsed by Americans for Prosperity. Named the “Just Sentencing Bill,” HB2270 would restore fair and proportionate sentencing in Arizona by allowing people incarcerated in prison to have the opportunity to earn time off their sentence for good behavior and program participation.
The proposed legislation would modernize Arizona’s outdated sentencing laws in the following ways:
- People with non-violent convictions can earn credits through positive behavior and programming to reduce their time behind bars from 85% to 50% of their their sentence plus another 15% under community supervision.
- People with serious, violent, or aggravated convictions can earn credits through positive behavior and programming to reduce their time behind bars from 85% to 65% of their sentence plus another 15% under community supervision*.
*HB2270 would not effect people with flat time, life sentences, or violent offenses against children.
